Tint darkness is measured by Visible Light Transmission, or VLT: the percentage of light that passes through the film and glass. The lower the VLT, the darker the tint. Florida sets different limits for different windows, and the rules differ slightly between sedans and SUVs or vans.

Florida tint limits for sedans

Windshield: non-reflective tint is allowed above the manufacturer's AS-1 line (the top few inches of the windshield).

Front side windows: must allow more than 28% of light in (28% VLT or lighter).

Back side windows: must allow more than 15% of light in.

Rear window: must allow more than 15% of light in.

Florida tint limits for SUVs and vans

Windshield: same AS-1 line rule as sedans.

Front side windows: more than 28% VLT.

Back side windows: more than 6% VLT.

Rear window: more than 6% VLT.

Other rules to know

Reflection: front and back side windows can't be more than 25% reflective.

Mirrors: dual side mirrors are required if your rear window is tinted.
